Trekking Through the Rainforest to Morne Diablotin

On our hike to the top of Morne Diablotin on Friday, January 22, we encountered many different obstacles. We also got to see the variety of topography and vegetation in Dominica’s tallest mountain. Early that morning, we all drove up to the start of the trail at 1,900 feet. Some of us, including myself, had been nervous about the hike for a couple of days, but once we got up there everyone was excited to start. During the first half of the hike, the steep steps up the mountain were a challenge. But it was cool in the rainforest, and we were even able to hear the distinct calls of the native Sisserou Parrot in the canopy.

The second half of the hike up to the top of the mountain had different terrain, with roots from the trees tangled up into giant knots. It was also challenging but fun to climb and hang on to them as we made our way through the forest. Although I had hiked on mountains before, I had never done anything like the trail to Morne Diablotin and it was one of the many great experi

ences I’ve had on this trip so far. Once we reached the top of the mountain at 4,747 feet, our view was cloudy but it was a great feeling to be up there. After hiking back down, the adventure totaling about 7 hours, we all were exhausted but felt accomplished overall.
